What this is

Pin & Piston is a conceptual model for understanding, coaching, and diagnosing dip-drive pressing mechanics in strongman. It is not meant to be a rigid dogma or a list of hard thresholds. It is a model of what ideal force transfer would look like if the system were operating as cleanly as possible.

This matters because strongman pressing is messy. Implements vary wildly. Athletes vary wildly. The literature is thin on strongman-specific pressing biomechanics. So instead of pretending that one cue or one rule solves everything, this model gives us a way to see what is happening and make better decisions.

The purpose of the model

The point of this model is not to say that every successful presser must look identical.

The point is this:

A successful dip drive is ultimately the dip drive that results in a successful press. That matters. There will always be examples of elite athletes who break some piece of the ideal and still press huge weights. This model does not deny that. It gives us a best-practices reference point so that when something goes wrong, or when progress stalls, we have a way to analyze it.
